Nasty WVO

Postby 1Ipelican » Fri Oct 09, 2009 4:31 pm

I have been making good bio for a few months now. I receive my WVO in 2 gal totes and let it settle an decant the first half or so and put the remainder in a 500gal slop tank. I have dewatered and filtered the slop oil and it smells bad and looks like coffee except quite oily (clear brown). The titration is 32, so trying two stage acid/base. I found some recipes but so far my test batches have turned to soap . Solid at room temp.
Cooking at 135F
added 7ml conc H2SO4/ liter
and 120 ml MeOH/ liter
mixed acid with alcohol first.
cooked for 2 hour
cooled and titration dropped to 10
do I start over with the MeOH and H2SO4 until I get the titration lower?

That is some horrible WVO that I wouldn't even bother with, personally. No matter how well your process is, the yield is going to be in the 25% or less range. Some who have found a titration of 13 or so have gotten at best 50% yield and the rest glycerin. But, if you do want to get into the full details on what to do to try and get what's use-able out of it, you should consult the journey2forever.org website. They have the best experience with this kind of stuff, or at least the people to contact about it who have done the process for very bad WVO.

the reason i can't help you much is because we throw out any oil worse than a 6 for titrations. (not worth it if you're just going to get glycerin and even worse, wasted time for bad process / mistakes)

May I recommend WVO sources in California? Panda Express (franchise chinese food) and In-N-Out Burger (good quality cottonseed oil). Franchise restaurants are excellent sources as they ALWAYS use the same type of vegetable oil. I have more info if needed. Just PM me. I used to work FULL TIME acquiring WVO for a diesel engine- conversion company.
